Etapa Preliminar:
Students are given a paquete handout. This booklet contains practice exercises which cover most of the concepts covered in this etapa.
Hint: Keep all your booklets for review at the end of the year!
This etapa deals with the following material:
Vocab: Greetings and introductions, likes and dislikes, describing people and places, asking for information, talking about school life (includes telling time), and talking about students’ activities and goals (includes expressions of frequency). See page 25 for a complete list of vocabulary covered in this etapa.
Verbos:
Regular -ar, -er, -ir verbs
Verbs ending in -cer, -cir
Irregular verbs – ser, estar, tener, ir, venir, decir
Difference between ser & estar
Expressions with tener
Futuro proximo using ir a + infinitivo
Irregular "yo" verbs: caer, hacer, poner, salir, traer, conocer, dar, saber, ver
Stem-changing verbs: e-ie; o-ue

de cambio radical: e-ie; o-ue; jugar (u-ue)

4. Escritura: You are introduced to a new student at school. Escribe el diálogo. Incluye, por lo menos, cinco buenas preguntas y cinco buenas respuestas.

This etapa deals with the following material:

Past tense (el preterito) of regular -ar, -gar, -zar, -car, -er/-ir verbs
Past tense of the irregular verbs ser, ir, hacer, dar, & ver.
Your test on Unidad 1 etapa 1 will include all material mentioned above.
In addition, you will be asked to write a paragraph using the past tense in which you say what you did last summer (el verano pasado).
Unidad 1 Etapa 2 – el arte latino
This etapa deals with the following material:
Vocabulary related to food
Vocabulary related to art and art galleries
More verbs that are irregular in the pretérito (see page 63 in text):
1. andar
2. estar
3. poder
4. poner
5. querer
6. saber
7. tener
8. venir
Note: these 8 verbs have irregular stems. They have the same irregular preterite endings as the verb "hacer" which you learned in U1e1.
The following verbs have irregular stems and the same irregular endings as the above verbs except in the 3rd person plural (ellos) form where the i is dropped.
9. decir
10. traer
11. conducir
12. producir
13. traducir

By the end of this etapa, you should be able to write a nice paragraph about what you did last week or last weekend or last summer, using the preterite tense.

Use Francisco’s trip to Chicago as a mode. Opening sentence could be:
La semana pasada fui a Chicago.
Criteria will be the same or similar to the oral presentation.
