The Hawthorn trees lining the walkways on the Grant St. side of Victoria High School will be removed in the new year. In the most recent independent inspection Talbot Mackenzie and Associates, Consulting Arborists concluded that the trees “have major defects that are impacting their structures” that they have “outgrown the typical lifespan” and recommend they be removed.
The arborists also highlight the fact that the trees are “not native to the region” and are “highly susceptible to infestations”. We will be seeking recommendations for an appropriate, ornamental, native tree to replace the hawthorns.
In consultation with the Vic High Alumni association and Archives we do not believe that the trees have any commemorative value.
